Psychotic GIRL
The cover girl of L'Officiel Latvija April-May issue, Keiera Douglas has her own perception of the world and fashion, and she prefers to work with designers, who have similar point of view.
In shooting for L'Officiel Latvija, you appear in clothes by the Danish brand Heliot Emil, created by the Juul brothers. Tell us more about this collaboration?
I had the honor of being invited to their Fall 2023 show in Paris fashion week. I found it bold and audacious, I had never experienced anything like that. Their DNA, that I find among other things to be about brutalism, industrialism and avant-garde, fascinates me. Working hand in hand with the talented photographer Thomas Lavelle, we were able to define the story we wanted to create. For this shoot, I did not wear glamorous makeup, my nails were not painted, and I did not make any effort to adopt feminine poses. We also had the chance to work with Parts of 4, a brand that is modernizing the jewelry world. For instance, they don’t classify their jewelry by gender. I think that’s what the era we’re living is about at this very moment: rethinking our relationship to gender norms and deconstructing a few thousand years of cultural and religious standards.
You seem to be ready for experiments, including shooting for avant-garde designers. What do you think of avant-garde fashion in general? Do you wear such clothes in everyday life?
Absolutely, the access to freedom in any form is something that drives me. I find in avant-garde fashion a way to challenge conformity. I see it as a tool that allows me to be creative, wearing clothes that speak for themselves, opening conversations about norms, identity and art. It’s not just about wearing the clothes but also about being part of something that promotes liberation and the expression of one’s individuality.
How do you navigate social media?
It feels effortless, as my main focus is to share anything that is a source of life and energy to me. The purpose is to share what resonates with me and what I feel could have a positive impact on the people that have an interest in seeing my world.
If money were no object, what sort of job would you like to have?
Anything that involves helping others.
How do the tools of beauty and fashion lend themselves to crafting your identity and help you live more authentically?
I don’t think of my identity as crafted, as I feel I’m constantly evolving. There’s so much we can be and that goes beyond fashion and material possessions. To live more authentically, I find that meditation is extremely valuable.
In what clothes do you feel most comfortable in everyday life and at evening events?
It’s essential for me to feel like I’m "wearing the clothes" and that they are not "wearing me". That could be as much as a leather mini dress or just a basic tank top and baggy pants. Depending on my mood, I always go for what feels good.
What is the craziest piece of clothing in your wardrobe?
My grill kiss boots by Rick Owens are definitely the most outstanding and surprisingly comfortable.
If you could pick a theme song to describe your life right now, what song would you choose?
Haha, I would say “Psychotic girl” by the Black Keys.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever received?
There’s this line from Fight Club : “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”
