Victoria’s Secret Has Hired Its First Plus Size Model

Is it too late?

Victoria's Secret has just hired its first plus-size model, but the lingerie brand is a little late to the party since other brands have been using models of different shapes and sizes for years. Nowadays, consumers want more options regarding different sizes, and retailers are responding with actions to show greater inclusion and diversity in campaigns and products.

Victoria's Secret's reluctance to enter the world of plus size underwear had always seemed odd and confusing. After all, it is one of the primary underwear-market shareholders, offering good-quality lingerie to women around the world. Perhaps the company was trying to preserve its image of super-thin models.

Last fall, Ed Razek, chief marketing officer of Victoria's Secret parent L Brands Inc., told in an interview that no one was interested in seeing plus size or transgender models. However, consumers think otherwise. The reaction was so severe that the company hired its first transgender model, Valentina Sampaio. Razek left the company after having worked there for nearly three decades.

Meanwhile, Victoria's Secret keeps fighting. Its sales and profits have continued to decline since 2017, with several startups and smaller brands entering the market. Many of them listen to their customers, choosing models of different sizes and ethnicities.
