The film, slated for release in 2027, will feature musical elements and aims to tell his extraordinary journey from a small Danish village to global skincare icon.

Born on May 4, 1951, in the small town of Nibe, Denmark, Ole Henriksen has become synonymous with radiant skin and boundless positivity. His eponymous skincare brand, launched in 1983, pioneered the use of vitamin C in skincare and has grown into a global powerhouse now owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH. In February 2011, Henriksen sold his product line to LVMH for an undisclosed amount, though he continues to serve as the company's Creative Director. The brand underwent a relaunch in 2017, organizing its offerings into color-coded collections addressing specific skin concerns.

Personal Journey and Transformation

Q: We've heard that your own skin struggles led you to skincare. Can you share that story?
A: "My journey into skincare was very personal. In my early twenties, I developed cystic acne that was both physically and emotionally devastating. It affected my self-confidence tremendously. I tried everything available at the time, but nothing seemed to work. This personal struggle ultimately became the catalyst for my career in skincare, as I was determined to find solutions not just for myself but for others facing similar challenges."
Q: Your time in Indonesia is rarely discussed. How did your studies there influence your approach to skincare?
A: "My time studying in India was transformative. I was introduced to holistic healing practices and Ayurvedic traditions that completely changed my perspective on skincare. I learned that true skin health comes from balance&mdash;both internal and external. These Eastern philosophies taught me to see skin as a reflection of overall wellness, which became fundamental to my approach. I incorporated many of these natural ingredients and healing principles into my earliest formulations, combining them with Western active ingredients for a truly unique approach."
Q: Before skincare, we understand you had a career in ballet. How did that transition happen?
A: "Yes, dance was my first love! I trained extensively in ballet and performed professionally for several years. That discipline and artistic expression gave me a deep appreciation for the body's capabilities and aesthetics. The transition to skincare happened gradually after my skin issues began affecting my confidence on stage. What many people don't know is that the performance aspect of my personality&mdash;the joy, expressiveness, and discipline from dance&mdash;has been instrumental in how I built my brand. I brought that same passion and precision to skincare."

Q: Did you always have an interest in skincare?
A: "I started using creams as a child. Our mother used to apply creams on our faces to protect from the dry and cold weather conditions in winter, and I was fascinated by it. When I started in business, it was unusual for men to come for complexion treatments. But my first male client was 'straight as they come' Sylvester Stallone, and it opened the door to other men like Mark Wahlberg and Justin Timberlake."
Q: Can you talk about the early days of your business?
A: "I studied chemistry at UCLA in London. The product evolution wasn't an easy journey. The first products I made at home in Tupperware boxes. At that time, I didn't even have a car&mdash;I couldn't afford one. I would ride my bicycle to work and back to my kitchen. But then I started developing my own products professionally. I was good at letting people know about Ole as a man and about the expert. I was doing TV talks in my early days, and then Oprah gave me half an hour on her show, and that's how it really took off in a big way."
Q: How did it feel to be the only gay person in your village?
A: "I was always outspoken and never in the closet. I was called gay before I knew that I was. When we would have showers after school sports, I would start getting erections and tried to hide them. That's how I knew. Then I went to Copenhagen, and people have always been supportive and good-spirited. But when I moved to LA, two years later I was called to the immigration officer downtown, and he was asking a lot of questions. Out of the blue, he asked, 'What's your sexuality?' I knew something was at stake. I said I'm gay, and the officer jumped in his seat. He said, 'Young man, I just want you to know that the law classes you as a sexual freak. You can go home and pack your bags because you will be deported.' I stood up, and as I approached the door, I turned and said, 'I'm a fighter, and you will never get rid of me.' Two years later, they changed the law."
Q: Your battle with immigration authorities will be featured in the biopic. Can you tell us more about those examinations you had to undergo?
A: "This was a dark chapter in American history that's important to share. From 1967 to 1990, U.S. immigration law officially categorized homosexuality as a 'psychopathic personality' and grounds for deportation. After I was threatened with deportation, I had to undergo a series of psychological examinations to prove I wasn't mentally ill. They put me through extensive questioning about my sexuality, my relationships, and my personal life. I had to gather medical affidavits and testimony from psychologists stating I was mentally sound. It was dehumanizing, but I refused to lie about who I was. I was determined to stay and fight. I waited nearly ten years for my Green Card because of my sexuality. The system was designed to break people's spirit, but I channeled that struggle into building my business and proving my worth. This part of the script shows a different side of me&mdash;my resilience and determination when faced with institutional discrimination."

Q: When is the musical biopic planned for release?
A: "2027. It would be in the later part of the year with casting happening next year."
Q: How has the film idea been received so far?
A: "The film idea was market-tested in Denmark, with a very high buy-in&mdash;90% of Danes are interested in watching the story."
Q: What excites you most about this project?
A: "I was always open for adventures, and my life has always been a rollercoaster of emotions. The idea of my life story coming alive in an unexpected way really excites me. This film is a musical where we can all dance and sing along and lift our spirits. It's about the inner glow of life and also the glow in your eyes, in your smile, and of course, your skin."
Q: Who would you like to see play you in the biopic?
A: "Timothy Chalamet. He's amazing, also a very talented actor. However, there was also a musical done about my life 80 years ago. There was an actor that they actually called in Hollywood... he would be more thoughtful. I would say on the right reign, of course, whoever plays me would need to spend time with me, getting under my skin. I think they also would have to walk around the grounds. I just sent a kitchen and wheels out the other day from our talk together, but I have an open mind."
Q: So it's a biopic, but there are fictional characters. How do you see introducing fictional characters and blending the genre?
A: "The fictional characters will be coming from the USA, but I think that's fun because ultimately my love affair with Broadway and musicals... I think they add a special charge. My mom will be in the movie too as a character. I feel whatever can elevate the movie and just stay connected to all the characters. Obviously, you have to have a catalyst in a film or something to happen. I trust the talent of James Wiley so much. I'm unpredictable to this very day&mdash;I'm not a monkey the way I behave, I'm at the beach or I climb trees or whatever. So whatever serves the project."
Q: Who is producing the biopic?
A: The film is being produced by Niels Juuls, with direction by James Wiley.

Q: How about some of the celebrity faces you're hoping to get into the musical biopic?
A: "Sylvester Stallone was a long-term client of mine. I adored him from the get-go&mdash;grounded, kind, just a giant of a man. Of course, if he could play a hand, that would be great. When Sly first visited me, I had a very strong body, and he said, 'Ole, do you mind if I teach you to exercise every time I come in the room, and then you repeat, and then you'll do the treatment?' There's a lot of fire to practice with this master, Mr. Stallone. Sly could do 300 pushups at a time. Cher is another possibility but it hasn&rsquo;t been confirmed yet.&rdquo;
Q: What about Christina Aguilera? I know she's a big fan of yours.
A: "I've known Christina for decades and decades. When she was first married, she wanted to be part of a commercial I filmed. What's amazing about Christina is that we all have pain, but when you really pull her aside, she's kind, sweet. We love her. She really is much beloved, and she has an unbelievable voice."

Q: Can you tell us about the decision to sell to LVMH and how that changed your company?
A: "Selling to LVMH in 2011 was one of the most significant turning points for the brand. It was a carefully considered decision. I had built this company from nothing&mdash;literally making products in Tupperware in my kitchen&mdash;to an internationally recognized brand. But to truly scale globally, I knew partnering with a luxury conglomerate with extensive resources would be necessary. LVMH understood my vision and, crucially, allowed me to stay on as Creative Director. This meant I could maintain the heart and soul of the brand while gaining access to superior research facilities, distribution networks, and marketing expertise. The 2017 relaunch with color-coded collections was a direct result of this partnership&mdash;simplifying our offerings while maintaining our efficacy and uniqueness."
Q: Was it difficult to let go of full control of your namesake brand?
A: "There's always a bit of letting go when you've built something so personal. But I've never viewed it as losing control&mdash;more like gaining partners who could elevate what I had started. The LVMH team respected the brand DNA and my vision. We've had an extraordinary collaborative relationship. They understood that my personal story and connection to the products were invaluable assets to the brand. I'm still deeply involved in product development and the overall direction. Honestly, seeing your brand reach corners of the world you never imagined is worth any adjustments you might make along the way."

Personal Philosophy &amp; Skincare

Q: You've always come from a place of dreams. What's your biggest fear?
A: "I don&rsquo;t have a fear of not achieving something I planned to because every day is an achievement, it's a level. Then you wake up as part of a new day, and you can set new goals for new things. Regardless of who you are, this life is a rollercoaster. Even the most famous and richest person in life experiences ups and downs. You never know what illness is going to happen, you never know when loss can happen. And in relationships&mdash;long relationships&mdash;there are always issues, and you have to talk and develop them."
Q: How do you maintain your amazing energy?
A: "Music playlists, including David Bowie who used to be one of my clients. A lot of the music will be featured in the film! I've come from a little village, and this film will inspire people to pursue their dreams, to trust the person that they are, and with a sense of humor."
Q: What is your number one tip for good skincare?
A: "Exfoliate! Why? Because it removes the dead skin cells and exposes new skin and texture. In my brand, I have a peeling night treatment. I also do retinol, but I'm a big fan of AHAs. I do glycolics that are up to 30% in a four-in-one treatment. But there's also all the other actives like peptides, and of course, hydration. The product should also incorporate vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides, etc. During the day, it's vitamin C and hydration. At night, it can be AHAs and retinol. You can keep it simple if you're consistent. The skin never becomes immune to the benefits of actives, just like your body never becomes immune to the benefits of broccoli, or salmon, or eating well."
Q: How many pushups can you do now?
A: "I'll do 50 at a time, and then I take a little break in between another exercise, and then do another try and another."
