India in Fashion
Curated by Hamish Bowles, global editor-at-large for Vogue and editor-in- chief of The World of Interiors, and designed by Patrick Kinmonth with Rooshad Shroff, the exhibition "India in Fashion" features iconic Western couture and ready- to-wear designs inspired by India, from the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the guests of the opening event were noted: Gigi Hadid, Penelope Cruz, Zendaya and other celebrities.
Whether it is transparent muslins, whimsical chintzes conceived on the Coromandel Coast, the varied draperies of the sari and dhoti, or the botehs of Kashmir’s shawls, the treasury of India’s sartorial and textile traditions have provided inspiration to royal courts, European haute couture, contemporary design visionaries, and even global fast fashion. The first exhibition of its kind in India, the show will also trace the birth and development of the contemporary Indian fashion community.
The showcase features works of pioneering Indian designers like Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, Anamika Khanna, Anita Dongre, Anuradha Vakil, Manish Arora, Manish Malhotra, Rahul Mishra, Ritu Kumar, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Sanjay Garg, and Tarun Tahiliani. These are complemented by the works of their global counterparts like Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, Jean-Philippe Worth, Mainbocher, and Yves Saint Laurent.
The opening day of this exhibit was marked by the unveiling of a beautifully illustrated coffee table book published by Rizzoli. It features an introduction by Hamish Bowles and scholarly essays by noted curators, historians and journalists in the fields of fashion, textile and art history. Among the guests of the opening event were noted: Gigi Hadid, Penelope Cruz, Zendaya and other celebrities.
