“I don’t think many people see me as a muse of a luxury brand. When I was young, I never dreamed this would happen. But collaborating with Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, I never felt that I have to pretend to be someone else. When I interact with CHANEL, I discover something new inside me, which happens when I shoot a movie. Cool, spontaneous projects with authenticity are sacred. Working with brilliant minds is definitely amazing and a blessing. I fell in love with CHANEL because of their attitude of protecting what’s precious.”

Why did you choose a suit for the Oscars? What was the inspiration as it is custom made by Virginie Viard? Can you describe it? Do you feel empowered by wearing it?

One of the enormous gifts of working with the House and with Virginie in particular is that you&rsquo;re always able to find surprising aspects of yourself within such aspirational settings. You watch those clothes that walk down the runway and it&rsquo;s almost far-fetched imagining picking them apart and individualizing but that&rsquo;s the next step of the collaboration: you get to find yourself within that world and in this case, because it&rsquo;s such a rare opportunity and it&rsquo;s such a moment to be recognized in this way after so many years, it feels so personal. I really wanted to be the most honest that I possibly could and not feel that I tell someone&rsquo;s else story but finding my own. There&rsquo;s already such a mutual artistic aid that we provide each other me and CHANEL. It was obviously a little audacious to ask Virginie who&rsquo;s so busy doing beautiful shows all the time to step out and spend time on working on something like this. But it was the one opportunity to be me. I didn&rsquo;t want to feel placed in an outfit, I wanted to feel it&rsquo;s second skin. I wanted to feel an elevated elegance, and the right way to do this was to lean in to &ldquo;less is more&rdquo; and allow yourself to stand in your own skin rather than put an armor. So, I asked her for simple and obviously I got the most polished and inspired version of that. I feel I pushed her in a direction maybe she would not have immediately gone in, and she pushed me too. We found each other in this particular collaboration. It feels so modern and of the moment, but free. When you pick a dress from the runway, you feel like you need to do it justice. This feels here the other way around.

As an actress, you tell stories on screen. Would you say you&rsquo;re writing your own story with CHANEL too?

If you look at the people that have worn CHANEL clothes over the years, there&rsquo;s such a rich narrative. And that&rsquo;s my job! I love making movies. Obviously, I like to tell stories. So, it&rsquo;s just really fun to unpack all of that and grow to get better. CHANEL has been with me on every, really, meaningful step of my career. They were hugely cooperative with Olivier Assayas when we did Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper, as with Pablo Larrain on Spencer. I wonder how many movies we&rsquo;re going to do in the future, I wonder how much room there&rsquo;s going to be for more. Because I hope there will be a lot more.

How do you see Virginie Viard&rsquo;s style and vision translated into this suit? How does your relation evolve with her?

Virginie is so close to everything CHANEL has made for so many years and is now spearheading and responsible and really coming into her own rock star nature. I&rsquo;ve been here for a while, it&rsquo;s really cool to witness because we talk a lot about the fact that the House pushes the borders and beyond, and it has, forever, but I think right now, we&rsquo;re living in this accelerated period of progress. And she&rsquo;s really keeping up! I never thought that I would be somebody that would be so into something like this ever. I feel so taken care of and so visible. That&rsquo;s the way a director makes me feel. It&rsquo;s really fun because I feel that defining myself is a huge opportunity. And so right now, choosing the clothes, Virginie designing something original, which never happens, it&rsquo;s an unbelievable gift that she&rsquo;s giving me. Because what CHANEL does always fit into a larger story. It&rsquo;s such a wild moment for me and CHANEL is totally on this journey. Actually, it&rsquo;s literally like if I had an idea for a movie, and I go to my favorite director of all time, and ask to make this for me, and they&rsquo;re like, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m busy, but sure&rdquo;.

How does it feel to be nominated for your first Best Actress Oscar? And for this special movie?

I feel kind of hysterical. I can&rsquo;t believe I get to have these conversations. I can&rsquo;t believe I get to be in these rooms, and with people I just have obviously admired my entire life&hellip; I presented at the Oscars&nbsp;once, and I looked at everyone, I literally almost swallowed my tongue. I feel completely inhabited and floating through, like this is not real. It&rsquo;s been such a great run and the movie&rsquo;s obviously gotten so much more exposure due to all of this racing stuff. I just didn&rsquo;t expect it and the gift of that was really nice. It&rsquo;s nice not to make marginal arts, it&rsquo;s nice to have everyone go: &ldquo;This was cool&rdquo;. I&rsquo;ve never had that. It&rsquo;s a really special feeling to be in a huge pool and be together with that many people instead of having like, &ldquo;oh, this is our little sideline movie, and we really love it&rdquo;. I&rsquo;m very proud of that.

How was it to be accompanied by CHANEL from the set to the red carpet and for the press tour throughout the whole &ldquo;Spencer&rdquo; beautiful adventure? Are Oscars the perfect ending?

I feel very safe with CHANEL. I feel I can rely on the House. It&rsquo;s been a daunting experience to take this character that coincidentally loved CHANEL so much, just as I do. CHANEL has such integrity and respect for art and for history that they were the perfect partner to make sure that&rsquo;s being done correctly. To make sure that it had the truth and commitment and honesty it needed. I would never have been as free and safe to live in that world with someone else doing this. The fact that we got to tell a story alongside the one that Pablo was telling in an atmospheric way contributed to defining that story. And then following the movie, supporting it, and celebrating the efforts have also been a total next step: I didn&rsquo;t feel the same in Venice as I felt in Telluride or at the LA premiere. Every step of the way has felt naturally inhabited and supported. You can track the feelings in the clothes and landing here in this special suit is completely different from how I showed in Venice, which was a departure for me: something ethereal. It felt true but more like a character, whereas this Oscars outfit feels stripped down.

You&#39;ve had a longstanding relationship with CHANEL since your debuts. It&rsquo;s rare and precious. Why do you think it keeps going on?

The first time I ever worked with my stylist, I was 15 or 16, it was for a premiere in Toronto, and I actually wore a Chanel dress! I have always been an observer of this world that really holds hands with what I&rsquo;m interested in and what I love. But it is not typical to find arenas in the fashion industry that feel truly expressive in a way that you can personalize. It always feels like art. But I never thought it could be my art. I never thought I could ever feel like I was a part of a story in some way. I didn&rsquo;t realize until I started working with CHANEL that there was actually beautiful material to mind, and sort of like feelings to access through clothing. And I think that understanding of what fashion can do definitely was through CHANEL. I started developing a relationship with Karl Lagerfeld before I was officially working with CHANEL. But then once I actually jumped in and started taking photos with him, I learnt more about the history of the House and how it came together, and the fact that all of these storylines have been resonating for so many years. And CHANEL has such commitment to it, and such integrity. It&rsquo;s so easy to fold yourself into that.

CHANEL has a longstanding and authentic history with Cinema from dressing actresses in movies to supporting emerging and established directors and actors, as well as preserving cinematic masterpieces. Is that why you chose to collaborate with CHANEL in the first place and still do?

I never feel pushed. Which is why we can have the beautiful exchange that we have, and that it does feel defining. Everyone wears CHANEL differently. Because there is something about each collection that is completely aspirational, there&rsquo;s something in there for everyone. I always try to find it. It&rsquo;s not always easy to look at those clothes from the runway and imagine yourself in them. But it&rsquo;s very fun to be able to see something that&rsquo;s so grandiose, in an artful way, and then try and find yourself in it. I always feel encouraged to find newness.
