Couturissime: Thierry Mugler’s Incredible Exhibition in Rotterdam
After rejecting the MET in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and fashion museums in Paris, Thierry Mugler finally agreed to bring the exhibition Couturissime to the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. This is the very first exhibition that traces his career in the world of fashion but also features art, photography, and perfumes.
For five months, the universe of the visionary couturier, director, photographer, director, and perfumer is revealed through more than 150 outfits, accessories, stage costumes, clips, videos, archives, sketches, and hundreds of images by leading fashion photographers such as David LaChapelle and Helmut Newton. Immersed in a remarkable journey reminiscent of the fashion revolution of Thierry Mugler, the visitor is invited to follow a path in six stages: Macbeth & the Scottish Lady, Stars & Sparkles, Belle de Jour & Belle de Nuit, The Photographer's Eye, Metamorphosis, and Futuristic & Fembot Couture.
After admiring the extraordinary costumes created for Macbeth, Shakespeare's play for the Comédie Française, visitors are led to discover the outfits made by the designer for the greatest stars of all time. From David Bowie to Beyoncé to Cardi B, the first room, Stars & Sparkles, sets the tone. Another essential area: The Photographer's Eye, where the black and white photographs of Helmut Newton have been exhibited. A true inventor of robotic silhouettes, the couturier also surprises in the Futuristic & Fembot Couture section with the iconic outfit worn by Lady Gaga in her Paparazzi clip. The exhibition exploits lots of technique, as the ocean is projected on the walls at the heart of which we can discover one of the most emblematic creations of the designer: the dress called The Chimera from haute couture Autumn / Winter 1997/1998 collection.
