Cartier’s New La Baignoire
The Story
Baignoire watch is an original creative gesture and a beauty discovered in the process of watchmaking. It first appeared in the 1910s when Cartier drew the first sketch of the oval that would be transcended by several years of research.
The story begins in 1912 when Louis Cartier questioned the traditional round shape in watchmaking and stretched it. With two parallel lines closed by two curves, the result of this research was the shape of a bathtub, and that is how the watch got its name.
The aesthetic continued to evolve until the late 1950s, and gradually became the iconic oval we know today, slightly curved, dial struck with Roman numerals or Arabic and bordered with gold gadroons.
The 1960s marked a second time in the history of the Baignoire watch, adapting to the rhythm of Swinging London, and in the Cartier London workshops, the Baignoire Allongée was born. It was an oversized watch, an affirmation of style and character and simple yet chic and excessive.
Today
Completely reworked by Cartier's design studio, today's Baignoire watch affirms what it has always been, with craftsmanship pushed even further. The watch pays tribute to the cult model of 1958. Its design has not changed, and yet it has evolved: narrower bracelet, Roman numerals redrawn on a silver sandblasted background, perfectly integrated bottom to the volume of the box, sealing up to 30 m, compliance with contemporary quality criteria.
The Baignoire watch perpetuates this aesthetic heritage and is more striking than ever.
