HeJi: Where East Meets West in Gastronomic Fusion

In the heart of Vilnius, HeJi has quietly emerged as a culinary destination, blending Eastern spirituality with Western grace. Recognized by the Michelin Guide 2024, it offers an immersive experience where design, culture, and cuisine converge.

The visionaries behind HeJi aimed to create an experience that extends beyond the culinary offerings. From the moment guests step through the doors, they are enveloped in an ambiance that feels at once intimate and grand, cozy yet elegant. The design was meticulously crafted by Kateryna Mardanova of Mardanova Design, whose thoughtful approach brought this concept to life. Inspired by the allure of Guangzhou’s hidden cafés and the refined polish of Michelin-starred establishments in Paris, HeJi offers a harmonious blend of contrasts that transports guests across continents and through time.

Blending Cultures & Crafting Atmosphere

HeJi’s interior reflects its culinary philosophy, blending traditional Asian authenticity with modern Western dining to create a space of cultural dialogue. "Our goal was to merge these two worlds to offer guests a visual and emotional journey through time and continents," says the team.

The deep, rich color palette of blues, scarlets, and golds is reminiscent of temple-like luxury, a nod to Eastern spirituality. Meanwhile, natural materials like travertine, brass, and handmade ceramics from China ground the space in authenticity. "We chose these materials not only for their beauty but also for their ability to create a tactile experience," the team explains. The brass elements, for example, were selected for their patina potential — over time, they will develop a natural aging process that deepens the connection between the guests and the space.

Challenges & Creativity

The restaurant is housed in what was once an abandoned nightclub — far from the serene sanctuary it is today. This presented a set of challenges for the design team, but it also sparked creativity. "We saw these challenges as opportunities," the owners explain. The dilapidated structure and unusual layout required innovative solutions, such as focusing on architectural flow rather than adding an elevator. A striking spiral staircase now serves as a functional and visual centerpiece.

Design as an Emotional Journey

HeJi’s design is intended to evoke a sense of emotional and sensory discovery. The layout of the restaurant, with its flowing spaces and thoughtfully positioned greenery, offers a tranquil reprieve. Lighting plays a significant role, with dynamic shifts in mood throughout the day. In the evening, the restaurant is bathed in a softer, warmer glow, perfect for intimate dining experiences.

The water-inspired ceiling in the bar area is another standout feature, offering a sense of fluidity and movement that complements the restaurant’s overall design. "We wanted the design to evoke tranquility, luxury, and a sense of being transported," they share. The restaurant’s ambiance is integral to the guest experience, with each detail meant to draw visitors deeper into the atmosphere.

Function & Beauty

At HeJi, design isn’t just about creating a beautiful space — it’s equally focused on functionality. The restaurant features diverse areas, such as a speakeasy bar, a formal dining room, and a private space for special occasions. Each area is designed with both aesthetics and practicality in mind. "Our lighting balances ambiance with practicality, and the seating arrangements maintain intimacy while maximizing capacity," the team explains.

The flow of space is seamless, guiding guests through various zones that feel distinct yet connected. Whether seated at the marble counter of the bar or within the intimate private room adorned with a gold-leaf dome, guests are immersed in an environment that feels curated and natural.

Notable Design Details

HeJi’s standout design features are as varied as its menu. From the brass entrance handle shaped like an Enso, a symbol of enlightenment in Buddhism, to the mosaic panel depicting warrior figures dynamically illuminated in the bar, each space tells a story. The private room, with its gold-leaf dome, offers an intimate retreat, while the marble bar counter feels like a place to linger and enjoy handcrafted cocktails.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the design is the level of detail. "Each space was crafted with distinct attention to detail, making it hard to pick just one standout feature," the team says. Yet, the brass entrance handle, shaped like an Enso, holds a special place in the heart of the design team. It’s a symbolic gesture that ties the entire space together, reminding guests of the deeper spiritual and cultural influences behind the restaurant’s concept.

Timeless Atmosphere

HeJi has earned widespread praise for its seamless blend of Eastern and Western design, with guests frequently noting the harmony between luxury and comfort. The balance between a refined aesthetic and an inviting atmosphere has become a standout feature, with many visitors coming not just for the food, but to fully immerse themselves in the thoughtfully curated space. As the team envisions the restaurant evolving over time, elements like brass will develop a natural patina, adding further character and depth to the already captivating ambiance.

With its unique blend of style and comfort, HeJi offers guests a dining experience that feels both intimate and refined, leaving a sense of quiet luxury.
